Project L.E.A.R.N.
Literacy Education and Reading Network
What is Project L.E.A.R.N?
Tarrant County has excellent education and employment programs for adults. However, services have largely been directed toward students who need to earn a High School Equivalency Certificate, move up to job training or a college program, or simply improve their English language skills.
Many other adults in the community have asked for help with basic reading skills. These adults are proficient English speakers whose goals include helping their children as well as improving reading for employment. Some have high school diplomas, but their reading skills are below the demands of employment today. The goal of Project L.E.A.R.N. is to provide tutorial services for adults who need to improve basic reading skills.
In this effort, volunteer tutors use the Barton System of Reading and Spelling, a perfect fit for many adults who need help with the basic skills of reading. Project L.E.A.R.N. also serves adults through other reading programs such as the Laubach Way to Reading as well as customized programs for building specific skills. An important feature of this program is providing books for the adult students to read to their young children, thereby increasing early literacy skills.
